Dr Lucia Ballerini, ADI

Lucia Ballerini was born in Florence in 1967.
She graduated from the Univ. of Florence, Italy, in electronic engineering in 1993 and received the doctoral degree in bioengineering in 1998 from the same university.
She has been doing research on image analysis methods, expecially for medical images, by using both classical methods and artificial intelligence techniques.
Since 1999 she holds a post-doc position at the Centre for Image Analysis, Uppsala, Sweden, working in a project for food quality estimation.
She is a life member of ADI (Italian Ph.D. Association) and coordinator of ADI-estero, the task group who gathers Italian doctors and doctoral students abroad. The group was estabilished mainly to take care of the "foreign affairs" of the association.

Lucia Ballerini è nata a Firenze nel 1967. Si è laureata in ingegneria elettronica, indirizzo biomedico, all'Università di Firenze nel 1993, ed è Dottore di Ricerca in bioingegneria dal 1998. Durante il dottorato la sua ricerca si è concentrata su metodi di elaborazione immagini, con particolare riferimento al settore medico, mediante l'applicazione sia di metodi convenzionali che di tecniche di intelligenza artificiale. Dal 1999 ha una posizione di postdoc presso il Centre for Image Analysis di Uppsala, in Svezia, nell'ambito di un progetto sul controllo della qualità del cibo.
E' socia a vita dell'ADI (Associazione Dottorandi e Dottori di Ricerca Italiani) e coordinatore della sede ADI-estero, responsabile della politica estera dell'ADI, di cui fanno parte dottorandi e dottori di ricerca sparsi per il mondo.
Dr. Franco Cacialli, University College London
Recently appointed to a Lectureship in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at University College London, UCL, Franco Cacialli has been a Royal Society University Research Fellow since 1996, working on the electrical and optical properties of organic semiconductors. He joined the Optoelectronics group led by Richard Friend in 1993, while completing a PhD on New Materials for Electronics at Pisa (Italy). From 1994 to 1996 he worked on the physics of electroluminescent polymers and related devices in the context of a Brite-Euram programme (POLYLED: Polymer Light Emitting Diodes and Displays). Before the PhD Franco studied Electronic Engineering at the University of Pisa, and Classics at the "Liceo Classico" in Massa Marittima (Grosseto - Italy). Very recently Franco has joined the Advisory Board of the Journal of Physics: Condensed Matter. Recentemente nominato Lecturer (Ricercatore) presso il Dipartimento di Fisica ed Astronomia dell'University College di Londra, Franco Cacialli è un Royal Society University Fellow dal 1996. E' membro dell' Advisory Board del Journal of Physics: Condensed Matter. I suoi interessi di ricerca sono le proprietà elettriche ed ottiche dei semiconduttori organici. Nel 1993 consegue il Dottorato di Ricerca su nuovi materiali per l'elettronica presso l'Università di Pisa. Nello stesso anno inizia la sua attività post dottorato presso il gruppo di Optoelettronica del Prof. Richard Friend, al Cavendish Laboratory dell'Università di Cambridge. Dal 1994 al 1996 si occupa della fisica dei polimeri elettroluminescenti e dei dispositivi ad essi collegati all'interno del programma Brite-Euram denominato Polymer Light Emitting Diodes and Displays (POLYED). Franco si è Laureato in Ingegneria Elettronica presso l'Università di Pisa, ha conseguito la maturità classica a Massa Marittima.
Prof. Roberto Cipolla, Jesus College, Cambridge
Roberto Cipolla obtained a B.A. (Engineering) from the University of Cambridge in 1984 and an M.S.E. (Electrical Engineering) from the University of Pennsylvania in 1985. From 1985 to 1988 he studied and worked in Japan at the Osaka University of Foreign Studies (Japanese Language) and Electrotechnical Laboratory, Tsukuba (visiting scientist) and he obtained an M.Eng. (Robotics) from the University of Electro-communications in Tokyo in 1988. In 1991 he was awarded a D.Phil. (Computer Vision) from the University of Oxford and from 1991-92 was a Toshiba Fellow and engineer at the Toshiba Corporation Research and Development Centre in Kawasaki, Japan. He joined the Department of Engineering, University of Cambridge in 1992 as a Lecturer and a Fellow of Jesus College. He became a Reader in Information Engineering in 1997 and a Professor in 2000. His research interests are in computer vision and robotics and include the recovery of motion and 3D shape of visible surfaces from image sequences; visual tracking and navigation; robot hand-eye coordination; algebraic and geometric invariants for object recognition and perceptual grouping; novel man-machine interfaces using visual gestures and visual inspection. He has authored 3 books, edited 5 volumes and co-authored more than 150 papers.
 Roberto Cipolla consegue un B.A. (Bachelor of Arts) in ingegneria presso l'Università di Cambridge nel 1984 ed un M.S.E. (Master of Science in Engineering) in ingegneria elettrica presso l'Università della Pennsylvania nel 1985. Dal 1985 al 1988 studia e lavora in Giappone presso l'Università di Osaka (ove studia Giapponese) e il Laboratorio Elettrotecnico di Tsukuba (come visiting scientist). Nel 1988 consegue un M.Eng. Nel 1991-1992 è di nuovo in Giappone avendo vinto la prestigiosa Toshiba Fellowhip e lavora come ingegnere presso il centro di ricerca e sviluppo della Toshiba Corporation a Kawasaki. Nel 1992 ènominato Lecturer (Ricercatore) presso il Dipartimento di Ingegneria dell'Università di Cambridge ed è nominato Fellow del Jesus College. Nel 1997 è nominato Reader (Professore associato) in Ingegneria Informatica e nel 2000 diviene Professore ordinario. E' il più giovane Professore ordinario dell'Università di Cambridge. I suoi interessi di ricerca sono la Computer Vision e la Robotica. In particolare la ricostruzione del moto e della configurazione tridimensionale di superfici a partire da sequenze di immagini; il visual tracking e la navigazione; la coordinazione hand-eye nei Robot; gli invarianti algebrici e geometrici per il riconoscimento di oggetti ed il raggruppamento percettivo; nuove interfacce tra uomo e macchina tramite gesti visivi ed ispezione visuale. Ha pubblicato 3 libri, è stato editore di 5 volumi ed autore di più di 150 pubblicazioni.
Miss Valentina Gagliardi, Trinity Hall, Cambridge University

Valentina Gagliardi was born in Italy in 1979, where she attended the Liceo Classico from 1994 to 1999. She then studied Engineering and Electrical and Information Sciences at Cambridge University (UK), where she obtained a B.A. in 2001. She was awarded the Sir William Siemens Medal for her final year project (VLSI Design). She is currently studying for a Master in Electrical Engineering; her project involves the study and simulation of traps in semiconductors.
In 1999 she worked in the R&D Department of DANA (Italian Head office) where she did finite element analyses. In 2000 she was an Electrical Engineer for Lutron Electronics (Pennsylvania, USA), where her main project was the study of radio frequency interference in dimmers. In 2001 she worked as a Drilling Engineer for Schlumberger (Norway Division, SCA), where she was involved in Directional Drilling and Measurements While Drilling Operations, supervised some drilling operations on a landrig and devised a new IT solution for the personnel scheduling of Scandinavian offshore operations.

Valentina Gagliardi nasce in Italia nel 1979, dove frequenta il Liceo Classico dal 1994 al 1999. Studia poi Ingegneria Elettrica all'Università di Cambridge (UK), presso la quale ottiene un B.A. nel 2001. Nello stesso anno ha ottenuto la Sir William Siemens Medal per il suo Progetto (VLSI Design). Al momento sta studiando per conseguire un Master in Ingegneria Elettrica; il suo progetto comprende lo studio e la simulazione di trappole all'interfaccia nei semiconduttori. Nel 1999 lavora nel Dipartimento di Ricerca e Sviluppo della DANA (Centro Italiano), dove effettua analisi ad elementi finiti. Nel 2000 lavora come ingegnere elettrico per la Lutron Electronics (Pennsylvania, USA), dove si occupa soprattutto dello studio di interferenza di radio frequenza nei dimmers. Nel 2001 lavora come Ingegnere Petrolifero per la Schlumberger (Divisione Norvegia, SCA), dove si occupa di Directional Drilling e Measurements While Drilling, è responsabile di alcune operazioni su piattaforma e progetta un nuovo software per l'organizzazione degli ingegneri sulle piattaforme Scandinave.

Miss Alex Lewis, EURODOC
Alex Lewis is in the third year of her PhD in Environmental Geophysics at the University of Birmingham, UK.
She graduated in 1999 from Imperial College London with a BSc(hons) ARSM in Geology; at Birmingham she has held elected posts on the student union executive and the University's Academic Board and Senate. She represented Birmingham students to the UK's National Postgraduate Committee (NPC) and later became NPC Chair. She is the student observer to the Board of Directors of the UK Quality Assurance Agency for HE, and an occasional writer for The Guardian newspaper.
The NPC (like the ADI) is a founder member of Eurodoc, the representative Council for European Doctoral and Postdoctoral Students. Eurodoc elected Alex as its President at the 2002 Conference in Girona, Spain.
Dr Marco Massenzio, Tamarix Consulting-Infinite Bandwidth, Cambridge
Dr Marco Massenzio, PhD, MBA ), is a Director of Tamarix Consulting, a company he founded with two other partners to provide advice on Broadband Wireless (Fixed/Mobile) technologies and markets.
Before that, he was a Senior Consultant at Albera Networks in Cambridge, having moved on from Hewlett Packard (UK) where he was Strategic Marketing Consultant for the Semiconductor Group, with worldwide responsibility for the GSM/UMTS markets.
Although HP has been the opportunity that in 1996 convinced Marco and his family to leave Italy, it was not his first foray abroad: in 1994 he had worked in The Netherlands for the European Space Agency research centre (ESTEC) where he developed a number of microwave circuits, also in connection with his PhD research activity.
Both the PhD and his Laurea (1991) where obtained from the Università di Roma "La Sapienza", developing microwave and mm-wave circuits and simulations tools (C++).

Marco Massenzio èuno dei soci fondatori di Tamarix Consulting, società di consulenza operante nel settore delle comunicazioni a banda larga, prevalentementèwireless' sia fisso che mobile.
Prima di fondare Tamarix, Marco ha lavorato come Sr. Consultant presso Albera, in Cambridge, proveniente da Hewlett Packard (UK) dove era Strategic Marketing Consultant, responsabile globale per il marketing di prodotti per il mercato GSM/UMTS.
Benchè HP sia stata l'opportunità di lavoro che ha convinto Marco e famiglia a lasciare l'Italia nel 1996, non è stata la sua prima esperienza all'estero: nel 1994, Marco aveva lavorato presso l'ESTEC, il centro ricerche dell'Agenzia Spaziale Europea, in Olanda, dove ha sviluppato una serie di circuiti a microonde, anche in relazione all'attività di ricerca per il suo Dottorato.
Sia il Dottorato, che la Laurea sono stati conseguiti presso l'Università di Roma "La Sapienza", durante i quali Marco ha progettato sia circuiti a microoonde che tool di simulazione software in C++.

 Raffaele Liberali è nato a Roma . Qui ha conseguito la laurea in Ingegneria Meccanica con una tesi dal titolo "Nuovo dispositivo di misura di portata massica". Dal 1978 lavora alla Commissione Europea, dove ha rivestito i seguenti incarichi di responsabilità: 1978-1983, Scientific Officer presso la Direzione generale "Energia" (DG XVII); 1983-1991, Assistente del Direttore Generale della Direzione generale "Credito e Investimenti" (DG XVIII); 1991-1996 Capo Unità "Struttura e personale A e LA - Esperti nazionali distaccati" della Direzione generale "Personale e Amministrazione" (DG IX); 1996-2001 Direttore degli Affari Generali presso la Direzione generale "Affari scientifici, ricerca e sviluppo" (DG XII).
Dal 9 Gennaio 2001 è Direttore della Direzione D "Fattore Umano" della Direzione generale "Ricerca"

Prof. Piero Migliorato, Trinity college, Cambridge

Piero Migliorato received his doctorate in Physics from the University of Rome in 1969. Having started his career at the CNR-Solid State Electronics Institute in Rome, he subsequently joined the Solid State Group in Rome University.
He was a member of technical staff at Bell Laboratories, Holmdel, NJ, and Principal Scientific Officer at the Royal Signals and Radar Establishement in the U. K.
From 1983 through 1989, he led the Polysilicon Active Matrix Display Programme at GEC-Hirst Research Centre, while holding a visiting chair at Liverpool University.
Since 1989, he has been with the Department of Engineering of Cambridge University, where he is presently Professor of Physical Electronics and a Fellow of Trinity College. He is also Consultant Director of the Epson Cambridge Laboratory.		 Piero Migliorato si è laureato in Fisica all'Università di Roma nel 1969. Ha iniziato la sua carriera accademica lavorando presso l'istituto di Elettronica dello Stato Solido del CNR di Roma, trasferendosi successivamente nel gruppo di Fisica dello Stato Solido dell'Università di Roma.
E' poi ricercatore presso i Bell Laboratories ad Holmdel, New Jersey, Stati Uniti e Principal Scientific Officer al Royal Signals and Radar Establishment in Gran Bretagna.
Dal 1983 al 1989 è capo del Programma Polysilicon Active Matrix Display al Centro di Ricerca GEC di Hirst e contemporaneamente visiting professor presso l'Università di Liverpool.

Mr Augusto Palombini, ADI
Augusto Palombini was born in Rome, in 1971. In 1997 he obtained a Laurea in prehistoric archaeology from University La Sapienza of Rome and concurrently he obtained a European degree in African Archaeology from Université Libre de Bruxelles.
He is currently a Ph.D. student in African Studies at the Istituto Universitario Orientale of Naples. He has been doing archaeological fieldwork in Italy and North Africa.
Parallel to his research work, Augusto writes on arts and history for the general public. In particular, in 2000 he published the historical novel "Dietro la sabbia" ("beyond the Sand"), Aletti editor. In 2001 he edited for the Italian Ph.D. Association (ADI) the book "Cervelli in fuga" (Brains on the run).		 Augusto Palombini nasce a Roma nel 1971. Si laurea nel 1997 in Lettere con indirizzo archeologico, presso l'università La Sapienza di Roma, conseguendo contestualmente un diploma di perfezionamento europeo presso l'Université Libre de Bruxelles.
È attualmente dottorando di ricerca in Africanistica presso l'Istituto Universitario Orientale di Napoli e lavora nell'ambito di missioni archeologiche in Italia e in Africa.
Parallelamente al lavoro di ricerca cura rubriche di divulgazione
storica e artistica. Nel 2000 ha pubblicato per Aletti il romanzo
storico "Dietro la sabbia". Nel 2001 ha curato per ADI - Associazione Dottorandi e Dottori di Ricerca Italiani l'edizione del saggio "Cervelli in Fuga" (Avverbi editore).
Mr Giovanni Pasinetti, Marshall Aerospace, Cambridge
Giovanni Pasinetti obtained a Laurea in Aeronautical Engineering from Politecnico di Milano in 1996. His thesis was on "Methodologies for the complete modelling of a flexible aircraft ". From 1997 he is a Chartered Engineer in Italy. From December 1996 to March 1997 he carries on research at Politecnico di Milano working on single states modelling of aerodynamic forces related to structural motions and gusts. He publishes one scientific paper on this subject. In March 1997 he moves from the University to the Italian Naval Academy. In June 1997 he becomes Coast Guard Officer in Genoa. He stays in the Italian Navy until September 1998. From September 1998 to August 1999 he works in the Flight Operations Department of Alitalia SPA. In September 1999 he is awarded a scholarship from the National Swiss Fund for Scientific Research and moves to Gonville and Caius College at the University of Cambridge. In September 2000 he obtains an M.Phil. from the Engineering Department of the University of Cambridge. His research work is on the analysis and control of the stability and flutter of an unconventional remotely piloted aircraft. From September 2000 he is an engineer in Marshall Aerospace, Cambridge. He is leading the Stability and Control Group of the Flight Dynamics Department. Giovanni Pasinetti si laurea in Ingegneria Aereonautica presso il Politecnico di Milano nel dicembre 1996 con una tesi dal titolo: "Metodologie per la modellazione completa della dinamica di un velivolo deformabile". Nel 1997 supera l'esame di stato per l'abilitazione alla professione di ingegnere. Dal dicembre 1996 fino al marzo 1997 rimane al Politecnico di Milano e si occupa di modelli a singoli stati di forze aereodinamiche dovute a movimenti strutturali ed a raffiche di vento, da cui ricava una pubblicazione scientifica. Lascia l'Università per frequentare l'Accademia Navale Italiana e nel giugno 1997 diviene Ufficiale della Guardia Costiera a Genova. Lasciata la Marina Italiana, dal settembre 1998 all'agosto 1999 lavora presso il Dipartimento delle Operazioni di volo di Alitalia SPA. Nell' agosto 2000 vince una borsa di studio del Fondo Nazionale Svizzero per la Ricerca Scientifica e si trasferisce al Gonville and Caius College presso l'Università di Cambridge. Nel settembre 2000 consegue un M. Phil. (Master of Philosophy) presso il Dipartimento di Ingegneria dell'Università di Cambridge occupandosi di sistemi di controllo per la dinamica del volo e soppressione del flutter. Dal Settembre 2000 lavora presso la Marshall Aerospace di Cambridge. Attualmente èresponsabile dell'area di Stabilità e Controllo all'interno del Dipartimento di Dinamica del Volo.
Dr Flaminia Saccà, ADI
Flaminia Saccà, born in Rome in 1968, Ph.D in Sociology of Culture and Political Processes (Political Science Dept., University of Rome La Sapienza), with a dissertation on "Political culture and public communication in the U.S.". Has been "Visiting Ph.D. Student" at the State University of New York, Stony Brook, U.S.A., where she has carried out field research for her Ph.D. She is now working with Prof. U. Melotti (Chair, Political Sociology, Sociology Dept., University of Rome La Sapienza) and with Prof. Carlo Mongardini, (Chair, Political Science, University of Rome La Sapienza). She has carried out various research project (both as a researcher and coordinator) in the field of political culture and public communication. She has also authored various articles and essays on the same subject.
Before graduating, Flaminia worked at Pirelli Ltd. (Burton on Trent, U.K.), first as a translator and then as a marketing coordinator.
She is national secretary of ADI and she is responsible for the political and institutional relations of ADI.

Flaminia Saccà, nata a Roma nel 1968, è dottore di ricerca in Sociologia della Cultura e dei Processi Politici presso la facoltà di Scienze Politiche dell' Università di Roma "La Sapienza". Ha conseguito il titolo con una tesi su "Cultura politica e comunicazione pubblica negli Stati Uniti" (Relatore: Prof. Umberto Melotti, Correlatore: Prof.ssa Marisa Ferrari-Occhionero). Ha svolto attività di ricerca negli Stati Uniti come "Visiting Ph.D student" presso il Dipartimento di Sociologia della State University of New York (SUNY) a Stony Brook, USA. Collabora con le cattedre di Sociologia politica del Prof. U. Melotti e di Scienza Politica del Prof. Carlo Mongardini, dell'Università di Roma "La Sapienza". Ha svolto e coordinato diverse ricerche soprattutto nell'ambito della comunicazione pubblica e politica (Dipartimento di Sociologia, Università di Roma La Sapienza, Regione Lazio) e ha scritto diversi saggi e articoli sul tema.
Prima della laurea ha lavorato presso la Pirelli Ltd., (Burton on Trent, U.K) come interprete prima e coordinatrice di marketing poi.
Per l'ADI si occupa delle relazioni esterne, istituzionali e politiche, in qualità di segretario nazionale.

Mr Filippo de Vivo

Filippo de Vivo (b. Milan, 1973) graduated BA (Hons) in History at the University of Cambridge in 1997. He then went on to take a master's degree (Diplôme d'Etudes Approfondies) at the École Normale Supérieure and at the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales in Paris, with a thesis on diplomacy and pamphleteering in seventeenth century France. He has also studied at the universities of Milan and Venice, and is currently finishing a PhD thesis supervised by Professor Peter Burke at the University of Cambridge on "Communication, polemic and history in early seventeenth century Venice". He has published several articles in Italian, French, and English. In the current academic year (2001-2002), he works as a temporary Assistant Lecturer in the Faculty of History of this university, teaching a course for finalists on the cultural history of early modern cities. Since 2001, he has been a Research Fellow of Trinity College, Cambridge. Since 1997, he has also been actively involved in a project for the creation of collegiate institutions attached to Italian universities. He is a "junior fellow" of Aspen Institute Italy.
Filippo de Vivo (Milano, 1973) consegue un BA (Bachelor of Arts) in storia all'Università di Cambridge nel 1997. Prosegue gli studi presso la École Normale Supérieure e la École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales di Parigi, dove consegue un diploma di terzo ciclo (Diplôme d'Etudes Approfondies) con una tesi su diplomazia e pamphlets nella Francia del Seicento. Ha anche studiato alle Università di Milano e Venezia, e al momento sta finendo la sua tesi di dottorato presso l'Università di Cambridge su "Communication, polemic and history in early seventeenth century Venice" sotto la supervisione di Peter Burke. Ha pubblicato diversi articoli in italiano, francese e inglese. Nell'anno accademico 2001-2002 è incaricato, in qualità di Assistant Lecturer presso la facoltà di storia di Cambridge, dell'insegnamento di un corso di storia culturale delle città in età moderna destinato a studenti dell'ultimo anno. Dal 2001 è Research Fellow del Trinity College di Cambridge. Fin dal 1997, ha partecipato attivamente ad un progetto per la costituzione di collegi universitari in Italia. E' "junior fellow" di Aspen Institute Italia.
