In last decades an increasing
number of young top graduates from Italian Universities faced great difficulties
in continuing their academic careers in Italy. Bureaucracy, the lack of transparency
and of a real meritocracy, extremely poor funding and lack of market request
for highly trained post-graduates, force many of them to move towards other
countries, where they find better conditions and career opportunities. Some
of them are very successful and reach a high standing in their profession,
but all of them can fulfil their personal dream: to make research and to contribute
to generating culture, science, technology and wealth. Which Italy, in turn,
buys back with obvious economic detriment.
For the first time a book, edited by ADI, the Italian Ph.D. Association, collected their stories, in the form of nice short
autobiographical notes, which catch the reader's attention with their charge of
human, professional and scientific richness. The Nobel Laureate Burton Richter
and the science journalist Piero Angela wrote the book introduction. These
biographies, together with the context described by the data and considerations
of ADI, results in a deep criticism to the present Italian University and
Research system.
The debate that followed both in the academy and in
the political arena has gained increasing resonance, and was given resonance by
the media.
